These charcoal drawings were done during the open sessions I’ve been running in my studio for the past 18 years.
I use Conte 4B compressed charcoal, or more recently, Pitt medium compressed, on archival toned paper. Drawings range from 2-minute gestures to 22 minutes (longer for some head drawings). If you’d like to own one, contact me.
I’ve studied the human figure through drawing, painting, sculpture, on copper plates and woodblock, and I think I come closest to understanding through simple charcoal, the most elemental tool.
I spent my junior year of college at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris but otherwise am self-taught. Even there the instructor rarely appeared. I graduated college in the ‘70s when life drawing was out of favor, and there was little instruction. I learned by working from the model as often as possible, and at the beginning by copying favorite drawings.
